20 Girl Power Songs (for dancers) – #movetolove2019

March is Women’s History Month, and we’re celebrating amazing women (& girls!) in dance history and pop culture. As we discussed with our 20 Self-Love Songs (for dancers) last month, we believe the world needs strong & inspired girls like us doing more of what we love.

So we’ve decided to continue our #movetolove2019 series, and this month spotlight performances from our dance camps with the Friday Night Show theme, “It’s Great To Be A Girl.” We’ve chosen 20 girl power songs that echo our dance camp mission: to empower girls to move to love.

What exactly do we mean by “move to love”?

MOVE – to pass from one place or position to another.

LOVE – to access the part of our mind that is connected to Spirit; the source of peace, joy, happiness and a whole bunch of other “positive” emotions.

So move to love means to move to a new place (or state of mind) – the state of mind connected to your Spirit (peace, joy, happiness…all that positive stuff). Please share your inspirational dance videos on Instagram this month! #movetolove2019 @danceadtc

Girl Power Song #12 – “Wonderland” by Natalia Kills

While fairytales can be brilliant & inspire imaginative discussions amongst girls, we must be vigilant in how we share these stories so we don’t promote outdated ideologies. “Wonderland” by Natalia Kills is a song that may feel dark, but it does a great job of challenging the idea that all women want a “fairy tale” life.

What do Snow White, Sleeping Beauty and Cinderella all have in common? They are each saved from a lifetime of misery and/or eternal sleep by a heroic Prince Charming figure. In a culture where we’re getting married later than ever before and many of us choose never to marry at all, the compulsory “let’s get married and live happily ever after” narrative seems particularly medieval.

But this “happy” ending is of perennial focus in fairytales and subsequent remakes of stories like The Little Mermaid, and even modern fairytales like Shrek, all of which culminate in a grand matrimonial celebration.

Another disheartening commonality that Snow White, Belle and Cinderella share is their heightened domesticity. Belle can only save her father from the Beast’s entrapment by becoming his house maid, and Cinderella is bound to a life of floor-scrubbing, while Snow White has to cater to seven male dwarves.

And since many fairytales incriminate females, they negate any concept of sisterhood – Cinderella’s evil step mother, her “ugly sisters”, Snow White’s jealous Queen, Ursula, the Wicked Witch of the West, etc.

As girls, let’s keep searching for our true Wonderland – let’s imagine a life as unique as we are, where we are free to believe and dream, and where we don’t have to wait for anyone else to live happily ever after!
