20 Self-Love Songs (for dancers) – #movetolove2019

February is supposed to be about love, but the most important kind of love for girls ages 8 – 17 is not romantic. We believe girls need more self-love. And we believe a key ingredient of self-love (& happiness) is doing what you love. The world needs strong & inspired girls doing more of what they love!

It’s day 19 of our #movetolove2019 series, where we’re spotlighting Friday Night Show performances from our dance camps. We’ve chosen 20 self-love songs with lyrics that echo our dance camp mission: to empower girls to move to love.

What exactly do we mean by “move to love”?

MOVE – to pass from one place or position to another.

LOVE – to access the part of our mind that is connected to Spirit; the source of peace, joy, happiness and a whole bunch of other “positive” emotions.

So move to love means to move to a new place (or state of mind) – the state of mind connected to your Spirit (peace, joy, happiness…all that positive stuff). Please share your inspirational dance videos on Instagram this month! #movetolove2019 @danceadtc

Song #19: “Go the Distance” From Hercules

Originally performed at our NC Dance Camp

“And when you feel that heat, the world is at your feet. No one can hold you down if you really want it. Just steal your destiny right from the hands of fate. Reach for the cup of life ’cause your name is on it.

Do you really want it?”

Contemporary Dance Routine: “Go the Distance” By From Hercules

The Self-Love Lesson from “Go the Distance” from Hercules

We’re all on our own version of a “hero’s journey.” This beautiful song from Disney’s Hercules is about knowing we have what it takes to succeed on our unique path to self-love, even though it won’t be easy. Hercules grows in confidence throughout this song as the lyric changes from “I can go the distance” to “I will go the distance.”

In the movie, Hercules is gifted with incredible strength, but he struggles to fit in. He does not know that he is actually a god until Zeus eventually reveals his past and informs him he cannot enter back into Olympus until he becomes a “true hero.”

Though he feels like an outcast, through his struggles he eventually finds where he belongs. This gives hope to us all that we too will find “our place” in the world. Most important, Hercules learns that a true hero isn’t measured by the size of his strength, but by the strength of his heart.
