ADTC Creator - Meet Kayleigh S.

ADTC Creator – Meet Kayleigh S. from NC!

“My A.D.T.C. Superpower is Creator. I love coming up with things that are different than expected, both in pieces I have choreographed, and in school. I aspire to push my ideas out of my comfort zone and really portray myself in an accurate way through my ideas. I can think of new solutions on the spot and feel as though creativity is my strong suit. I embody this in my daily life by challenging my mind to think of new methods and movement.

A difficult situation I’ve endured in my life happened in early December 2018. After suffering severe migraines for more than 2 months, I lost all feeling and movement in the right side of my body.I was scared it would never return. I couldn’t walk or dance. I got through it by having a great team of doctors who helped me through the process and think of the day I would dance again. Dance really was my motivation to get through it, so I could move and show my story. I learned to take my opportunity while I had it. I will never only go halfway in dance class because at anytime I could be knocked off my feet again. I will always bring everything I have to the table while I can.

I want other girls to learn to give anything you do all you have. You may not get another chance, so let yourself be vulnerable and leave it all on the dance floor! Even if it’s not your favorite style, give it all you have while you can. Effort and confidence is 90% of a performance and life. It also just makes everything so much more fun. Perseverance is key, and so is believing in yourself. So, go out there and give it all you have.”

ADTC: What is your True Color Personality Style?

Kayleigh S: I am green. I definitely agree with the color. I am extremely analytical and love school and how things work!

ADTC: Who is your Idol?

Kayleigh S: My idol is definitely Kathryn McCormick. I’ve had the pleasure of taking class with her multiple times at DanceMakers and she never fails to make me cry out of pure joy. She has such a positive and unique outlook on the world and connects to everyone she meets. She journeys into the unknown without fear, and she has such an open and beautiful mind. She allows me to find something unique inside myself.

ADTC: Why do you love to dance?

Kayleigh S: I love to express and tell stories. I also love the community dance creates and how empowered I feel when I’m dancing. I love having something I can always come back to and the discipline of it. It’s just so much fun and inspiring. It’s truly it’s own language that allows us to connect with one another.

ADTC: What is your proudest accomplishment & why?

Kayleigh S: My proudest accomplishment is winning 1st overall with my solo this year. Last year, I never placed in overalls, which didn’t upset me, but, I still never placed. This year, I have placed 1st every time I have performed and it showed me just how much I improved in one short year.

ADTC: What goals are you working on right now (in both dance & life)?

Kayleigh S: My primary dance goal is to improve my technique by taking more ballet classes and working outside of the studio. In life, my primary goal is to get my AS degree. I go to an early college high school, so as a freshman I’ve already begun taking college classes towards my degree! It’s a lot of work but it’s really rewarding.

ADTC: What is the most daring thing you’ve ever done? What did you learn?

Kayleigh S: The most daring the I’ve ever done was perform in front of thousands of people at the national beta club convention. Even though I perform all the time, I still get nervous, especially when there’s 20,000 people watching. But, I learned that it doesn’t matter how you do, it just matters that you show the audience what you have and your strengths. Most of them don’t understand technique and will only see if you have the confidence in yourself and your performance. Stage presence is more important than getting every step correct. Fun is key as well. It helped me to understand performing isn’t scary, if you don’t make it nerve-wracking.

ADTC: What is the your favorite dance memory & why?

Kayleigh S: My favorite dance memory is being backstage before competition with my group, and getting in the zone before our performance. We sang songs together at the top of our lungs, last minute rehearsed our dance and gave each other words of encouragement before tanking the stage. Connection is the most importance part of dance for me and I love that I have a strong dance family. It always stands out to me when I can feel the presence of those around me and our collective positive energy.
