Why Joanna Rocks:
Joanna Stone graduated from the University of Texas at Austin in 2003 with a Bachelor of Arts in Theater and Dance and since has been working as a professional contemporary and jazz dancer. She has danced with Contradanza, a Mexico City based contemporary dance company, and Rosanna Gamson World Wide, a Los Angeles City based dance company. While working with both of these companies Joanna was part of the original development of “Aura,” an evening long dance piece inspired by and based on the Carlos Fuentes novel with the same name. Joanna had the opportunity to perform “Aura” and other works with these companies in the United States, Mexico, Ecuador and Cuba.
Funded by a grant from the Mexican government, Joanna performed in South American cities and towns for two years with Contradanza. She then returned to the United States to work in various commercials and in the Comedy Central T.V. show, ‘Ving Break.” While in Los Angles, she also danced with Meh-tropolis Dance Theater, Winifred Harris’s Between the Lines Dance Company, Universal and Six Flags theme parks, and had a supporting role in the film, “Opening Night.” Joanna has taught in various studios in the United States and Mexico. Her specialty is jazz and musical theater. She also teaches yoga for children and adults.
Joanna enjoys going to the theater, gardening and traveling. Outside of dance tours, she has traveled to Europe, Africa and Central America. During her travels Joanna always finds a way to take a dance class in a foreign country, often in a foreign language! As a child Joanna went to summer camp every year from the age of 8 and up and during college she was a counselor and dance teacher at summer camps. Last summer Joanna had a blast teaching musical theater at the North Carolina ADTC camp!!
Joanna is in her first year of a Master of Fine Arts in Dance Program at Texas Woman’s University . At school, Joanna studies dance education, arts education awareness, and global dance opportunities. Joanna is interested in possibilities for opening up dance to wider audiences and entertaining vast amounts of the public. In doing so she is currently choreographing musicals and dance concerts with live musicians, disk jockey’s, and multimedia artists. Check out her website at www.jostonedance.com. And look for Joanna this summer as an Instructor-Counselor at ADTC!
