Dance Classes

ADTC weekday campers participate in four 1 hour dance classes each day. Standard weekday camps offer classes in jazz, funk, hip hop and musical theatre disciplines, but hosts can customize their camp and choose from a wide variety of additional dance techniques, including (but not limited to) lyrical, modern, tap, ballet, Latin, and street jazz.

Dance Classes can be held in dance studios, gymnasiums, fitness centers, cafeterias and even outdoors. It is up to the host to secure and pay for the camp facility. Each dance space must have ample room to accommodate up to 20 dancers per class (though ADTC classes are typically smaller).

Friday Show (2:00pm)

Each session culminates in an all-camp Friday afternoon performance. Throughout the week, campers help to choose the show theme and pick out their costumes. In just five days, campers learn performance pieces in three or four different dance disciplines. Camp awards are presented at the end of the show and an ice cream party follows. Parents, siblings and friends are encouraged to attend. Don’t miss out!

Dance Discussion (Daily, 12:30 – 1:00pm)

Daily dance discussions are held from 12:30 – 1:00pm to explore dancer related issues like nutrition, technique, performance, dance history, dances of the world, and self-esteem. We have a list of popular topics – hosts choose which topics are the most appropriate for their camp.

Yoga, Breathing & Relaxation (Monday & Tuesday, 1:00 – 1:30pm)

Today’s youth are more stressed than ever. This session will teach participants methods of de-stressing themselves and meditating on their lives. Hosts decide which classes are most appropriate for their camp. We have a list of popular topics like “stress reducers,” “yoga,” “deep breathing techniques,” and “meditation.”

Dance Workshops (Monday & Tuesday, 1:30 – 2:00pm)

Hosts decide which workshops are best suited for their camp. Popular choices are dance therapy, world dance, improvisation, ballet-technique, leaps/jumps, dance tricks, and breakdancing.

Dance Tech Competition (Wednesday, 1:00 – 2:00pm)

Our "Dance tech" competition lets individual campers compete for their teams in dance events that showcase their talents. Dance tech night is made up of five different events: dance jeopardy, leaps, pirouettes, strength, and flexibility.

American Dance Idol Competition (Thursday, 1:00 – 2:00pm)

American Dance Idol is the highlight of the week for ADTC campers and staff. Campers choreograph their own dances and ADTC staff judge.

Dance Screening and Dance Groups

Because dance is the focus at ADTC, we need to know everyone's dance ability. This is for the safety and comfort of our participants. Check-in on Monday morning begins at 8:00am SHARP (every other camp day begins at 9:00am). Campers must arrive by 7:55am to ensure they are placed in the right dance group for the week.  Campers will learn two short dance combinations (one in jazz and one in hip hop) for an evaluation, which determines dance groups. Dance groups are broken down by both age and ability level. Class sizes are kept as small as possible to enable plenty of one-on-one interaction and attention.

ADTC Camp Directors & Teachers

ADTC camp directors are members of some of the best national and international studios and performance groups. You can choose between Level 1 and Level 2 instruction for your camp (price is dependent on the level of instruction you choose – see below).

Level 1 Instruction – Your instructors are usually competitive college dancers who are certified to direct beginner, advanced beginner and intermediate level ADTC camps.

Level 2/3 Instruction – Your instructors are professional dancers, teachers and ADTC choreographers who are certified to direct intermediate, advanced and professional-level ADTC camps.

Instructor-Camper Ratios:
Less than 16 participants 1 Instructor (for private camps with one dance group for one level only)
16 - 30 participants  2 Instructors (two dance groups, divided by level)
More than 30 participants 3 Instructors (three + dance groups, divided by level)
