History of Broadway Dance

Broadway dance, usually performed in "musicals", is popular around the world, but it was not until the 20th century in America that dancing and drama became truly integrated and “Broadway dance” was recognized as a new style of jazz dance. Credit for this breakthrough goes to Agnes de Mille, whose ' Oklahoma!' (1943) made dancing an integral part of the story. Equally successful were the dances choreographed by Jerome Robbins for ' West Side Story', which brought a new vitality to Broadway. Robbins, in his turn, influenced other famous choreographers such as Bob Fosse and Michael Bennett. Other famous musicals include 'The Sound of Music,' 'Les Miserables,' 'Cats,' 'The Phantom of the Opera,' and 'Rent.'

Broadway Dance at ADTC ULTIMATE Overnight Camps

....a 5, 6, 7, 8! “And all that Jazz!” At ADTC ULTIMATE Overnight Dance Camps, Broadway dance is offered as one of the four core classes each session-week (campers also take core classes in jazz dance, hip hop & sometimes even contemporary or lyrical). Dancers learn fun and exciting routines from selected Broadway musicals. ADTC campers learn the style of Broadway greats like Bob Fosse and Jerome Robbins while developing performance technique and facial expression. Overnight Broadway Dance INTENSIVES

Broadway & tap dance is the main focus at our Broadway/Tap Dance INTENSIVES. Our INTENSIVE Broadway/Tap Dance Camps differ from our ULTIMATE Overnight Dance Camps only in that the dancing focuses on Broadway & tap dance styles alone (as compared to Broadway in combination with other dance styles like hip hop, jazz and lyrical). At our Broadway & Tap Dance INTENSIVES, campers take four dance classes per day that explore the many variations of Braodway & tap. American Dance Training Camp offers a team of renowned Broadway dance instructors worldwide who teach at our ULTIMATE and INTENSIVE dance camps. Our Broadway dance instructors can also choreograph pieces for that big recital, competition or event you have coming up &/or travel to your studio, school or private location for customized boot camps!

Competition Rules: All dances must be less than 3 minutes long (ANY dance style). Participants must indicate whether they choreographed the dance themselves (if not, you must give credit to the original choreographer). American Dance Idol has three categories: group dances (3 + dancers); pair dances (2 dancers) and solo dances (1 dancer).

Prizes: In each category, first runners-up receive a $25 iTunes gift certificate; and winners receive an iPod Nano (plus the chance to have their dance video, bio and an interview featured on the ADTC website!)
