WHY KATIE ROCKS
Katie currently lives in New York City and has performed for the last two years as a Radio City Rockette. She also teaches master classes and intensives at studios and schools in the New York Metro area.
Katie has an older sister with Down Syndrome who she believes is an incredible dancer! Her older sister has motivated Katie to teach classes at the Down Syndrome Guild of Dallas, which have been a huge self-esteem builder for everyone involved, including her! Katie believes dance is an amazing tool for bringing people from all backgrounds and levels together.
Katie grew up dancing in Plano, Texas at KJ Dance Designs where at age 12 she began assisting her teacher. After a few years of assisting she was given her own class at age 15. She was beyond excited at her first chance to teach and choreograph on her own and that year her class rocked it out to Hairspray's "You Can't Stop the Beat" in the recital. By the time Katie graduated from high school, she was teaching numerous classes of all levels and found her strength as a teacher was in motivating her students. Whenever Katie begins a class, she makes sure that she gets every single person's name memorized, no matter the class size! She believes personal feedback is incredibly important and not only helps the students focus more, but also makes them want to work harder.
Katie earned her BFA in Dance Performance from Southern Methodist University where she was near enough to her hometown dance studio to continue choreographing and teaching all dance styles and all levels. Many of her routines did very well at competitions and were even performed in national galas at WCDE and NYCDA.
For two weeks during January of 2011, Katie went to Africa and volunteered at an orphanage in Hohoe, Ghana. She describes it as the most amazing experience of her life. The conditions were very rural (sometimes no running water, dirt floors, etc). She spent the 14 days empowering and educating the children at the orphanage and teaching them dance moves! They had class out in the courtyard where girls and boys ranging from 4 to 17 years of age attempted to arabesque and pirouette...quite a site to see!
Beyond dancing, Katie LOVES camping! During her time at SMU she spent two summers in Taos, NM where SMU has summer programs. Along with academic credit, she took mountain sports and did a lot of hiking. She will always cherish her amazing memories from that summer and can't wait to create many new memories with ADTC campers in Vermont this summer!!
