Musical theatre dance, usually performed in "musicals", is popular around the world, but it was not until the 20th century in America that dancing and drama became truly integrated and “musical theatre dance” was recognized as a new style of jazz dance. Credit for this breakthrough goes to Agnes de Mille, whose 'Oklahoma!' (1943) made dancing an integral part of the story. Equally successful were the dances choreographed by Jerome Robbins for 'West Side Story', which brought a new vitality to musical theatre. Robbins, in his turn, influenced other famous choreographers such as Bob Fosse and Michael Bennett. Other famous musicals include 'The Sound of Music,' 'Les Miserables,' 'Cats,' 'The Phantom of the Opera,' and 'Rent.'
