Staff - Kambi Gathesha, Hip Hop Dance Instructor-Counselor

Kambi Gathesha is a street dancer who specializes in popping and waving, two dance forms of the Funk style dance genre. A lifelong performer, Kambi graduated from the world-renowned Juilliard School in New York City where he was a drama major.

As a hip hop dancer and choreographer, Kambi has performed in and helped stage pieces for the PMT Dance Studio, C.R.O.W.D. theater company, Nitestar theater company, MTV (specials featuring Beyonce, Usher and The Neptunes), Lincoln Center, NYU, and NYC Slam AIDS benefit.

Kambi currently teaches hip hop to 8-12 year olds at the Brooklyn Arts Exchange and is a member of "Streak Dance Concept," which conducts hip hop dance workshops with people ages 8-30. In addition to his career as a dancer & choreographer, Kambi is a 5th grade Math and English teacher with B.E.L.L. (building educated leaders for life).

In addition to super fun dance moves and routines, Kambi teaches ADTC campers about the history, richness and beauty behind the African-American art forms known as hip hop dance, b-boying and funk. Kambi feels that ADTC "gives campers a sense of community; a sense of belonging, a sense that they are needed as much as the next person to help the group function smoothly." He continues, "ADTC teaches young people to function outside their comfort zone and gives them skills they need to be able to meet people that are not like them, live with people that are not like them and include others who are not like them in their community. ADTC is a formative place for young people."
